Finding a great spot is no sweat
Parking in Downtown
The sign of a healthy downtown is how busy it is and how many people are there, meaning parking is a good problem to have; however, no matter when you visit Downtown, remember there are over 2000 free-to-park parking spaces within a 5-minute walk of where you’re going downtown. Sometimes walking from a parking spot to your destination downtown can feel like a hassle, but check out the video below to understand why we feel this way despite the distances from most downtown parking being shorter than the distance you walk in the Walmart Parking Lot. Parking locations are shown in Yellow with the Heritage Walk Greenway access to Main Street highlighted in Red.
These parking options include:
Main Street Parking - Free angled parking all along Main Street including reserved handicap parking
Church Street Parking - Free angled parking all along Church Street with easy and safe sidewalk access to Main Street
Town of Wytheville Municipal Lot - Free parking lot within a 2-minute walk of The Millwald
Withers Park & McWane Lots - Free parking lot within a 2-minute walk of The Millwald accessed through the well-lit and protected Heritage Walk Greenway

Other Ways to Visit Downtown
Besides driving downtown, remember there are many other ways to visit Downtown Wytheville for your favorite shops, restaurants, or events.
Walking - The Town of Wytheville is one of the most walkable designed small towns in Southwest Virginia with significant investments in sidewalks and walking infrastructure like the Heritage Walk Greenway system. In fact, nearly 50% of Town residents live within less than a 15-minute walk of Downtown and 75% live within less than a 30-minute walk. Especially from Spring-Fall, this is a huge asset for the community with the National Association of Realtors conducting surveys that found 79% of respondents said, “being within an easy walk of other places and things, such as shops and parks, is very/somewhat important to deciding where to live,” and “78% indicated they would be willing to pay more to live in a walkable community.” The Town of Wytheville is continuing to make public infrastructure investments to support Wytheville as a highly walkable community for its residents.
Biking - The Town of Wytheville has also invested, and is continuing to invest, significantly in biking infrastructure including trails, bike lanes, bike racks, and other amenities. In fact, over 90% of Town residents live within a 15-minute bike ride of Downtown.
Public Transportation - Through District Three & the Town of Wytheville, the Mountain Lynx Transit is available to anyone in the Town limits Monday-Friday 7am-5pm with a Summer Saturday Loop from 8am-2pm. All transit vehicles are wheelchair accessible and operate on two routes through the Town, but will deviate from the route for drop-off or pick-up by calling 276.228.RIDE.
How Far ARe You Actually Walking?

No matter where we go, you have to walk some distance from your parking space to your final destination. In reality, the distance from most of the ample off-street parking in Downtown Wytheville to your favorite restaurants, shops, events, or The Millwald is a shorter and safer walk than the distance you walk from a parking space into Walmart. It may not feel this way, but this is due to how our brains perceive the scale or urban design, so check our this video to understand how the design of our places trick us into thinking we’re walking further than we really are.
When Downtown Wytheville was once the happenin’ heart of Wytheville, it was always full of people and full of traffic, so as we continue to see vibrancy return to the heart of our community, we’ll have the good problem again of searching for a space
