This Class will be taught by the talented Kimber Simmons. Kimber has been working with a mixture of metals for many years and consistently pushes herself to learn new ways to create beautiful pieces of jewelry. Now, she is sharing her knowledge with the rest of us!
Etching is the process of using an acid to cut a design or pattern in a metal surface. Over the years, etching has had many uses – from the gold and silversmiths of the Middle Ages adding designs to suits of armor and the early printmakers printing books to the wonders of photography and the manufacturing of circuit boards. In this class, we will be using the etching process to create one of kind pieces of wearable art.
This class will introduce students to the basic techniques for etching designs onto brass and/or copper. Participants will first learn a bit of the ‘science’ of etching so they have a better understanding of what is occurring during the etching process and needed safety precautions. They will then experiment with different methods of creating designs and patterns on metal. Once the pieces has been etched, participants will turn their printed metal into wearable art (jewelry) by using jeweler’s pliers and other tools.
Students will have the opportunity to make at least 2 finished jewelry pieces.
All materials and use of tools are included in the price of the workshop.
No previous jewelry experience is necessary.
